Questions and Answers

Below you will find answers to many common questions about UC Davis Give Day 2024.

What is UC Davis Give Day?

UC Davis Give Day is a 29-hour online and in-person fundraising drive to support initiatives at UC Davis Health, our veterinary hospitals and the UC Davis campus.

Our eighth annual Give Day will be held this year on April 19-20. It will coincide with our Picnic Day celebration, which is the largest student-run event in the nation!

As always, the goal of Give Day is to bring our community together by sharing, following or financially supporting programs that have made an impact on the lives of people everywhere. We also hope together we can continue to support programs that address the emergency needs of our students, and animals and their owners who are going through difficult times.

No matter what programs you support, or how much you feel comfortable contributing this Give Day, we hope participating in our online event reminds you that you are an important member of our community, and that through our combined effort, we are formidable. We thank you in advance for your participation in Give Day and for helping UC Davis reach greater heights.

Why should I give to UC Davis or UC Davis Health?

UC Davis is considered a public ivy in "California's college town." For more than a decade we have earned impressive national rankings and widespread acclaim for excellence at UC Davis and UC Davis Health. We are proud to be a credit to our wonderful community and those who support us. Our recent rankings are:

- No. 6 top public university in the nation,

- No. 1 in the nation in diversity, inclusiveness and internationalization,

- No. 1 in the nation in sustainability and agriculture,

- No. 1 in the nation in veterinary medicine, on our School's 75th Anniversary, and

- No. 1 medical center in Sacramento for a decade (UC Davis Medical Center).

In fact, our nationally-renowned UC Davis Medical Center is a leading referral center for the most seriously injured or ill patients and the most medically complex cases. It is nationally ranked in multiple adults and five pediatric specialty areas, features the only Level I trauma center in inland Northern California, and a Level IV NICU.

Your generosity provides UC Davis Health, our veterinary hospitals, and our students and faculty the support they need to pursue the ambitious research goals that have long defined UC Davis and continue to drive us today.

In our eighth year, supporting UC Davis and UC Davis Health still makes a huge difference!

Whether you support our world-class health system, new technologies research, emergency funding, Athletics or our top notch academic programs, a gift of any size makes an important impact on the area you support.

If you are unable to give during this time, becoming a social ambassador by sharing information about Give Day on your social media channels would be greatly appreciated. It's a wonderful way to spread the word to your fellow alumni, patients, parents, friends and students. Sign up here.

Thank you for joining us for UC Davis Give Day 2024!

If I give early, will my gift be counted on Give Day?

YES! It will! And we encourage people to give early to make sure the process is convenient for them.

But early gifts will not show up on the site immediately if you give before the 29-hour event starts on Friday, April 19. Instead, you will receive an email confirmation/receipt that your gift has been accepted and is being processed.

When the Give Day event launches at noon, Friday April 19, you will see all of the early gifts have been included in the numbers displayed on each page. At that time, names will also show up on the donor walls as well.

If you have questions about this, please email giveday@ucdavis.edu.

What are challenge gifts?

Challenge Gifts, given each year by donors who are passionate about UC Davis, are similar to matching gifts in that they are incentives that inspire people to give. When a challenge reaches a specified number of donors on Give Day, the challenge donor's gift is activated, making the new donors' gift go even further.

As an example, a donor is challenging others to support the UC Davis Annual Fund. When 20 gifts are received, their gift will be activated. After a challenge is activated, the challenge box will disappear but you can still give to any challenge gift fund by hitting the Give Now button and finding the fund in the drop down selection.

Once a challenge is met, it will move from its original page to the Challenges page to indicate that it is closed. HOWEVER, YOU CAN STILL GIVE TO CLOSED CHALLENGES!

Every year we have a wide array of challenges that reflect our diverse areas of research and our academically comprehensive campuses. In addition to those that support academic and research programs, we have several challenges that support emergency funds for students and animals. All of these programs are important, are of enduring value to those they assist during their own difficult times.

Please give to what you are moved to support.

What are Social Ambassadors?

As noted above, Social Ambassadors support Give Day by sharing the UC Davis message of philanthropy through social media channels like Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. If you'd like to become an official Social Ambassador and access our Give Day materials and our stickers on Giphy, just sign up here.

After you sign up, you can send emails or post unique links to our website on your social media to help spread the word about causes you care about at UC Davis or UC Davis Health.

We encourage our Social Ambassadors to change their social media profile and cover photos to share the message of giving with their friends and colleagues in the week leading up to Give Day.

Your promotion of challenge gifts and causes you care about is crucial to the success of UC Davis Give Day.

How can I help spread the word about Give Day?

You can spread the word on all of your social media accounts by becoming a Social Ambassador and tagging your posts with #ucdavisgiveday, #everyaggiecounts and #ucdhstrong. Those hashtags will pull your posts onto our main page during Give Day.

Please also talk about Give Day to your friends, colleagues and anyone you think may be interested in supporting UC Davis or UC Davis Health, and the important work we do.

Promoting any of our challenges as a Social Ambassador this Give Day is greatly appreciated. Sign up here.

I tried to give and received an error message. What do I do now?

If you get this message, your order was declined by our payment processing system. This error is often a result of accidentally mistyping your billing address, or using your work address instead of the address affiliated with your card, which is likely your home address. So please double-check that and try to give a gift again. If you continue to experience issues, please email giveday@ucdavis.edu and we will assist.

Sending your credit card information through an email is not a good practice, generally speaking, so please don't do that. We will connect with you and help your gift get processed appropriately.

We know it can be frustrating when something like this happens, so we ask your patience in advance.

What if the fund or program I want to donate to is not listed?

Please select "other" during checkout and write in the fund of your choice.

The site will require you to select something in the drop-downs to give, so we suggest choosing the Annual Fund or the College/School/Program in the department or program drop-down menu, then select "other" as your fund designation choice.  There will be a place to write in the fund designation you would like to support.

If we review the information you provide and have questions about where you want your gift to go, we will connect with you to make sure your gift is allocated correctly, and in accordance with your wishes.

Is my gift tax deductible?

The UC Davis Foundation and The Regents of the University of California - the two gift-receiving arms for UC Davis - are both qualified charities that provide donors with tax benefits to the full extent of the law. Your gift qualifies for a tax-deduction in accordance with IRS regulations, during the calendar year that you make your gift.

After making a gift you will receive an email with information that can serve as a receipt for your files. Please consult your tax professional for more information.

Where will my gift to UC Davis go?

It’s up to you! You may designate your gift to any area of the university that is important to you. Whether your heart is with your college or school, a student program, Picnic Day, or you have an interest in a specific research initiative, an area of UC Davis Health, or animals, you are free to choose what your gift supports. You can select from a wide range of colleges, schools, units, programs and centers to support, and when you make that choice... that is where your gift will go.

Can I give to more than one area?

Yes, you can make multiple gifts when you check out. For example, you could support one of our emergency funds and an area of campus you are passionate about. Make sure to select "Add a Donation" on the gift menu to select the other areas you would like to support. Your card will only be charged once for the sum of your donations.

Is there a minimum donation amount?

Yes. There is a $5 minimum.

How will I receive my tax receipt?

You will get an email confirmation of your credit card transaction right after you make a gift.

When will my card be charged?

Your credit or debit card is charged immediately upon finalizing your gift.

Are there fees associated with giving to UC Davis?

UC Davis retains a 6% fee on each gift to current use funds; this fee helps to defray the administrative costs incurred in managing UC Davis’ fundraising operations.

Who should I contact if I have a question about my gift?

For general questions about your gift, please email giveday@ucdavis.edu. Thank you.
