The Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at UC Davis is a university art museum with a profound commitment to education. All who enter emerge as students again.
The museum’s vision is to foster a community of lifelong-learners through one-on-one interactions with world class art, artists, and faculty that empower transformative educational experiences.
There will be no better time to fully appreciate this mission than with our exhibition, Wayne Thiebaud: 1958-1968. As the first to focus on this specific period of the artist’s journey, this exhibition studies the emergence of Wayne’s mature style coincident with the moment he began his illustrious teaching career at UC Davis. The spirit of the exhibition, along with many public programs it has influenced, resides as interactive, engaging, and accessible, reflecting Wayne’s value as an educator.
Inspired by a distinctive legacy of artists such as Wayne, we are proud of our unique opportunity to educate a wide spectrum of visitors. At the Manetti Shrem Museum, education is figuratively and literally “out front”, as a visitors approaching our building commonly catch sight of students practicing, studying, and learning. This spirit can be felt throughout the museum. With such features as lecture hall seating for 125, state of the art collections classroom for seminar classes, direct access to the Fine Art Collections, and most prominently, an indoor-outdoor wet studio for hands-on art making, the museum continues its dedication to lifelong learning.
