UC Davis Graduate Studies supports graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in over one-hundred disciplines, ranging from cultural studies to veterinary medicine. UC Davis master’s and doctoral graduates become leaders in their fields – researchers, teachers, politicians, mentors and entrepreneurs. Graduates go on to guide, define and impact change to address challenges within our global community.
This year on Give Day, we’ve chosen several areas your gift can support:
Guardians Professions Program
Nationwide 400,000 children are placed in foster care systems, but only 3% will earn a degree in higher education and even less receive a graduate degree. The Guardians Professions Program is the first program in the country dedicated to helping former foster youth gain admission to advanced degree programs. For foster youth who make it to college, the challenges are often insurmountable without the intervention of caring campus professionals who serve as coaches and mentors. We educate and coach scholars through the complex graduate application process, offer mentoring and funds for test preparation and campus visits. Thanks to the support of donors, 85% of UC Davis Guardian Professions Program scholars who apply to graduate school are accepted into a graduate program. We invite you to help our scholars reach their full potential.
Tara K. Telford Graduate Student Award
The Tara K. Telford Graduate Student Award was created to aid graduate student research in the Department of Chemistry to support research seeking to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. The average lifespan for someone with cystic-fibrosis is 37 years. However, as researchers discover new treatments and medications to cure cystic fibrosis for good, that average is increasing. This fellowship was created in honor of Tara Telford ('99,) who sadly passed away in November 2017. Tara was a graduate of the Mathematics department, a proud Aggie, and a friend to many on campus. Please join us in honoring her memory by supporting this research to find the cure for cystic fibrosis at UC Davis.
The McNair Scholars Program
The American Dream - the idea that America is the land of opportunity and freedom - is not always achievable to those who come from underrepresented backgrounds. However, with the right resources, we can help make this dream a reality. The McNair Scholars Program prepares first-generation and low-income undergraduate students for doctoral studies through research and other scholarly activities. Without the worries of financial stress and lack of mentorship, scholars are able to discover their research interests and skills through research internships with faculty mentors. They also offer GRE prep workshops designed to assist students with the application process, including financial aid. Our mission is to increase the number of graduate awards for underrepresented students in graduate education. Join us in transforming undergraduates into intellectual colleagues who will make an impact on the world through research.
Graduate Student Fellowship Fund
Gifts to the Graduate Studies Fellowship Fund help support talented and ambitious students across over 100 distinct graduate programs ranging from education and cultural studies to neuroscience and engineering. Whether it be finding a cure for terminal diseases or building devices to help detect harmful toxins in the air, it is all made possible by donors like you. With this fund, UC Davis is able to attract, retain, and recognize the next generation of researchers, teachers, politicians, artists, industry leaders, mentors and entrepreneurs.
